These Terms of Use govern your use of Red Stet: the website at redstet.com, the web app, and the Red Stet iOS app (together, "Red Stet"). Red Stet is operated by Red Stet LLC, an Oregon limited liability company ("Red Stet," "we," "us"). By creating an account or using Red Stet, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy at redstet.com/privacy.
13 and older. You must be at least 13 years old to create your own Red Stet account. If you are 13 to 17 (or under the age of majority where you live), a parent or guardian should review these terms with you, and by using Red Stet you confirm they have agreed to them.
Under 13: through a school only. Children under 13 may use Red Stet only through an account set up by their school or teacher, for schoolwork. In that case the school authorizes the student's use on the parent's behalf, as the Federal Trade Commission permits under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for educational services. When a school does this:
A child under 13 may not create a personal account. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account without school authorization, we will delete it and its information. Parents who believe this has happened can write to [email protected].
Your account. You sign in through Clerk. Keep your sign-in secure; you are responsible for activity on your account.
You own what you write in Red Stet: your documents, your marks, your recordings, and your composition fingerprint. You give us only the permission we need to store, encrypt, sync, back up, and display your content to you and to people you choose to share it with. We do not claim ownership of your writing, we do not sell it or any personal information, and we do not use it to show ads.
When recording is on, Red Stet records your writing session inside the editor, as described in the Privacy Policy. You can turn recording off for any document with the per-doc switch. Sealed sessions are encrypted into EAV-1 envelopes, signed, and anchored to the public Sigstore Rekor log. A Rekor anchor is public and permanent by design and cannot be removed by us or by you. The anchor contains a cryptographic hash and timestamp, not your writing.
When you share a document or recording with a teacher, co-author, or editor, they can read what you shared until you remove their access. You are responsible for choosing who you share with.
If you use Red Stet through a school, the school's agreement with Red Stet governs, together with FERPA, COPPA (for students under 13), and applicable state student-privacy laws. For school accounts we act as a "school official" under the school's direct control, and use student education records only for the school's educational purposes, as described at redstet.com/ferpa. School-provisioned accounts cannot start a self-serve wipe; deletion of school-owned records goes through the school's records officer. If these terms conflict with a signed school agreement, the school agreement controls for that school's accounts.
These optional features use your browser's built-in speech engines, which may be run by a third party (on Chrome, Google). They are off by default and we ask for your consent before first use. Those engines are governed by their providers' terms, not ours. For students under 13, these features should be turned on only where the school has approved them.
To run Red Stet we use service providers that process limited data on our behalf: Clerk (sign-in), Stripe (payments; card numbers never reach our systems), Cloudflare (hosting and delivery), and Sentry (error reports when the app crashes or hits a bug, which can include technical details such as browser type, IP address, and the page where the error happened). Red Stet uses no advertising networks and no analytics or tracking tools that follow you across sites.
Payments are handled by Stripe. Monthly and annual plans renew automatically until you cancel. You can cancel anytime in your account settings, and your plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for. Prices can change, but we will email you at least 30 days before your next renewal if yours does. Payments are non-refundable, except in two cases: if you ask within 14 days of your first annual payment or of an annual renewal, we refund it in full, and we refund any charge made in error. Downgrading to Free never deletes your writing.
Do not: break the law using Red Stet; try to access another person's account or data; interfere with or overload the service; reverse-engineer it to defeat its security (the EAV spec and verifier are published openly and you may build tools that verify envelopes); or present a Red Stet record you altered as genuine.
You can wipe everything (type "wipe my Red Stet history", then a 7-day countdown you can cancel) or close your account and keep an anonymized record, both from Customizations → Privacy & data. Backups keep a 30-day point-in-time recovery window; after that a deletion is final. School accounts are deleted through the school, as described in sections 2 and 6.
We may change or discontinue features. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will tell you by email or in the app before the change takes effect. Continuing to use Red Stet after that means you accept the new terms. We will not make a material change to how we use information already collected from students under 13 without the school's authorization.
Red Stet is provided "as is" and "as available." A Red Stet record is evidence of how a document was written; we do not guarantee any school, publisher, or other party will accept it. To the extent the law allows, Red Stet LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or $100. These limits do not apply where the law does not allow them, and they do not limit our obligations under COPPA, FERPA, state student-privacy laws, or a signed school agreement.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon and applicable U.S. federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Oregon, unless a school agreement or the law where a school is located requires otherwise.
